James Joseph O'Brien Jr.

James Joseph "J.J." O'Brien Jr., 78, passed away on April 12, 2024, in Napa, CA.

He was born on October 11, 1945, in Napa. J.J. served in the California Army National Guard from 1966 to 1981 and dedicated over 31 years of his life as a Motor Officer for the California Highway Patrol from 1967 to 1998. His commitment to service extended beyond his military and law enforcement careers as he also worked at the Napa Post Office. J.J. was a devoted outdoorsman who found solace in hunting, fishing, and diving. His passion for the outdoors was evident in the legendary weekend wild game (Roadkill) BBQs he hosted, where he generously shared his bounty of Venison, Elk, Moose, Wild Boar, Salmon, and Abalone, with friends and family.

He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of over 39 years, Lisa O'Brien; sister and brother-in-law, William Dugan and Patricia (O'Brien) Dugan; sons: James Joseph O'Brien III, Kevin Michael O'Brien, Sean Michael O'Brien, Kyle Thomas O'Brien; granddaughters: Kiera, Sloane, and Fallon O'Brien; grandsons: Ronan and Hunter O'Brien; numerous nieces, nephews and many cousins. J.J. was preceded in death by his parents, James Joseph O'Brien Sr. and Thelma M. (Biale) O'Brien.

J.J.'s life will be honored at a service at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church 3700 Lassen Street, Napa, CA, 94558; on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, Starting at 10:00 a.m. with the Rosary, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. There will be a Reception held following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the CHP 11-99 Foundation (https://chp11-99.org/). The Claffey & Rota Funeral Home in Napa, CA, is assisting the family with arrangements. J.J. will be remembered for his dedication to his community, his love of the outdoors, and the joy he brought to those around him through his kindness and generosity.

Back in high school I remember Jim having a ready smile. And as one who had the courage to stand up for what he thought was right---being almost always right about that. A very good person back then who obviously became a very good man.
