Kay Beverly Kaliman, 72, of Tumwater, WA, passed away on June 30, 2018, due to cancer. A lifetime partner, daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother, she will be remembered as a kind and loving person with an extraordinary sense of humor. She was born on October 20, 1945, in Spokane, WA, to Virginia (Strickland) and Marvin “Joe” Hasting. She was a graduate of Napa High School in Napa, CA, and the University of Montana in Missoula, MT. 

Kay grew up in Montana (Willow Creek and Springhill) and California (Napa). She enjoyed riding horses and spending time with her family and friends in Montana (College years and summers throughout her life.) and Washington. After graduating from college with a degree in education, Kay became a 2nd grade teacher at Packwood Elementary where she began her lifelong pursuit in helping others. In 1978, Kay began working for the Washington State Employment Security Department. In her 38 years of service, Kay had the opportunity to work in several offices in many different capacities. She especially enjoyed many of her co-workers, whom she referred to as friends, as well as the public she served. She was an active member of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security (IAPES) on the state and national levels and took great pleasure participating in many sponsored community activities and conventions.

Kay had many enjoyments in life. As a child, she especially loved riding horses. Her favorite pets included horses Skeeter and Freckles, dog Fizzlebritches, and cat Snohmie, to name just a few. She loved flowers of all kinds – growing her own, visiting botanical gardens, and, especially, seeing them on parade floats. One of the highlights of her life was attending the Rose Bowl Parade with her daughter, Teressa.

Kay had a love of baking for her family and friends – Ethel’s sugar cookies, all varieties of pies, Christmas fudge, and popcorn balls. Everyone who knew her can easily recount sitting around the kitchen table enjoying one of her sweet treats with a cup of coffee while listening to a funny story. Kay also loved celebrating all holidays and became rather well-known with her over-the-top decorations, holiday sweatshirts, and vast collection of earrings for every occasion. 

She had a love of travel, especially long road trips with someone else driving so that she could enjoy the views. Kay enjoyed spending time with her fellow members of Take Off Pounds Successfully (TOPS), watching her soap operas (General Hospital and All My Children), and was a big fan of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. 

While she had many hobbies, what Kay loved most was the company of her friends and family. Kay especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren: Jayseph, Kayleen, Robert, Richard, Alexandrea, Kassandra, Josie, Rebekah, Matthew and Hezekiah.

She is survived by her children, Virginia (Sean) Detty, Teressa (Daniel) Rexus, and Veronica Kaliman; her brother, Kenneth Hasting; her lifetime partner of 38 years, Charles Wiley; his son, Joshua (Julianne) Wiley; cousin Gary (Sandie) Metcalf, and her first husband, Louie Kaliman.

She is preceded in death by Charlie’s daughter, Tabatha (Kevin) Cropper. 

A celebration of her life is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21st at Mills & Mills Funeral Home and Memorial Park located at 5725 Littlerock Rd SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.
