I agree, Don was a great guy. We have lost so many awesome friends.

A lovely man.  His obituary does not include his 'retirement' vocation:  driving buses for Napa Valley Transit Authority until about 2014.  I often rode with him and we had many good conversations.  I saw him a few months back and am glad I had that opportunity.  Peace to you, Don.

Donald Barstad

1944 – 2018

Beloved husband, father, neighbor and friend, Don Barstad, peacefully departed this earth on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Queen of the Valley Hospital, Napa, following a long illness. His beloved wife of over fifty years, Susan, and son, Kurt, were by his side.

Don was born 6-2-1944, in Napa, CA. A lifelong resident of that city, Don graduated from Napa High School in 1962 and went to work for Berglund Tractor and later, Western Electric.

On 1-17-1965, Don married Susan Griffin; the two of them celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary earlier this year. Their union produced two children—a son, Kurt (Dianna) and daughter, Debbie (Rick Villa). Don and Susan also have four grandchildren (Rick, Jake, Kassandra and Gabriel) and two great-grandchildren. Don is also survived by a brother, Gordon (Lynn). He was pre-deceased by both parents and two brothers, Glenn and Harold. Don also deeply loved his furry family members. He leaves behind Star; and is finally reunited with his beloved girl-pup, Lucy.

On 10-7-1966, Don joined the Napa Fire Department and was among the first group of paramedics in that city. He retired 6-30-1991.

One of Don’s favorite pastimes was bowling and in the early 1980’s, he turned semi-pro. He also enjoyed the game of golf and for a time had a golf-related business as well. Don was also a member of both the Masons and Shriners.

Don was a kind, affable man and there was no limit to his loving, giving nature toward those he loved. Even so, he had a will of iron and bravely battled his health challenges, right until the end. He will be sorely missed, by friends and loved ones.

There will be a private memorial gathering for Don’s family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Don’s memory to the charity of your choice.

I'd like to quote Jim Shuck above, Don was definitely "one of the good guys".
